With the support of the BIAMC, the Detachment’s inaugural ride was a success. We left in the early morning hours and rode down to Vancouver, where we met with the truck carrying the bronze statues and 9/11 relics, which were escorted from Oregon by the PGR. After meeting with the sculptor and a quick photo, we then made the long escort back to NW Harley with a stop near Exit 88. Even though it was really hot, the day was enjoyed by all, we were able to support our local community, and we made a positive visible presence.
A special thanks to “Redman”, “Ike”, “Dozer” and “That Guy” (Buffalo Soldiers) who made the ride. For those who were not able to attend, the Detachment would like to personally thank you for the supporting messages.
It’s good to be home and to be part of the greatest group in the world.
Respectfully,
Brian “Pirate” Agar

Tim’s Pharmacy employees join to help coworker

Everything seemed fine when Melodea Musser, better known as Mel, left work last Thursday from Tim’s Pharmacy and Gift Shop. But that’s not the case anymore, and she needs the community’s help.
Musser, a 2008 Yelm High School graduate, is in the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with a potential brain aneurysm.
“They (doctors) are not really able to say because aneurysm is a really specific thing that happens, but right now what we’re just saying is she had a severe brain hemorrhage because they’re not actually sure what happened,” said Ashley Larsen, over-the-counter manager at Tim’s Pharmacy.
To raise money for Musser, a car wash fundraiser is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Tim’s Pharmacy in Yelm, 106 First St. S. The car wash will request donations to help pay for her medical bills.
Musser turned 21 in January and got engaged to her high school sweetheart, Mike Corrigan, shortly thereafter. They met as juniors and have been together ever since.
Larsen said Musser’s fiancé said she woke up early Friday complaining of a bad headache. Musser was then taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, where she remained in the intensive care until around 6 p.m. Sunday before being airlifted to Harborview.
“They put a drain into her brain where the bleeding occurred, so that’s drained out,” Larsen said.
Larsen said Musser is “slightly responsive” and gave the nurse a thumbs up sign when asked to do so.
Stacy Dragt, manager at Tim’s Pharmacy, described Musser as “bubbly, happy, energetic and very willing to help others.”
Musser works at Tim’s Pharmacy with her mom, Bona, who has worked there since September 1998.
“Friday was like, I don’t even know,” Larsen said of when the tragic news broke. “It was just like the worst horrible day ever. No one could focus on anything. Nobody could believe what was happening.”
“All of us had last seen her on Thursday evening and she was fine. She was just regular Mel.”
Tim’s Pharmacy plans on raising funds in other ways besides donation jars and Sunday’s car wash, such as a bake sale. Larsen said some accounts to raise money for Musser are set up at local businesses and bank branches.
“We’ve just kind of been … giving support to family,” Larsen said.
“We’re gathering together and trying to formulate some kind of plan to try and figure out a direction on how to help her, because we just feel really bad and really far away.”

August 5, 2011 was a glorious sunny day. The birds were singing and babies were fast asleep, when all of a sudden, CVMA National President Michael “Eagle” Long reported those magical words (with the booming sound of his voice), “Brothers and sisters please welcome our newest Detachment, 11-1A, Olympia Wa”. Indeed, it was a glorious day!
All joking aside, the creation of the Detachment was the direct and proximate cause of many, hard work, camaraderie, and the development of some great ideas. Since the official creation of the Detachment, we have nominated and elected officers, and we are finalizing our inaugural event, which will be an escort on 9/10/2011 (bronze statues from Vancouver to the Veterans Memorial Museum for their 9/11 celebration). For all of those who would like to participate in the escort, check out the Event and Calendar Sections of this site.
Moving forward, the Detachment will continue to honor and serve Veterans and our local communities by maintaining a positive, consistent and visible presence.
Please join me in welcoming the new Detachment.
Respectfully,
Brian “Pirate” Agar
